Today... HSC All My Own Work (and tomorrow, and...)

Today I have been rolling Year 10 students through the library's computers to do HSC All My Own Work. Over 200 need to get it done.  As each one finishes, I'm sending for the next one.  Haven't sat down all day, my initials have been needed nearly 400 times (and are getting more baroque/scrawly by the time) and it's been madly busy.  Thanks be most students are co-operative; I wish I could say the same of the computers...I prefer such technology consistent rather than contrary! 

HSC AMOW will take up a lot of this week; except Wednesday afternoon, because Wednesday night is The Oscars, I mean, the Year 10 formal, and hair appointments, fake tans, facials, makeup and primping of all sorts and kinds (I read today that the industry around formals is now larger than that around weddings!) will of course take priority over anything else.  They do settle down a lot by the time the Year 12 formal rolls around...

If you're not in NSW, HSC AMOW is a program about issues such as copyright, acknowledging sources and so forth, and the site has information and quizzes.  All HSC students need to have completed HSC AMOW before commencing Year 11 work - our school aims to get 'em done at the end of Year 10, so they're ready to roll at the start of the next school year.

Atlantic salmon eggs

The Copyright-Free Photo Archive says:

The images and photos found in this archive come from three main sources: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Each of these sites clearly state that their photos and images are in the public domain and give the conditions for their use. Please read their statements.

The archive has a (very long and sometimes odd but still useful) list of master keywords to aid your searching, which is how I located the rocket image I used a couple of blog entries ago.  The individual sites also have search options, which might sometimes be a tad more reliable.

There are all sorts of images - space, wildlife, some historic ones, oceans and seas, moons and fish and rockets and all sorts of other things you'd expect (and not) from those archives.  Worth a look (which is why I chose the Atlantic salmon egg image, with its eyes....)

Plagiarism and malpractice

Ensuring students are aware of what constitutes correct use of information, and what is plagiarism and malpractice is important (of course).  The NSW Board of Studies has a program done by all NSW HSC candidates.  If you're not aware of All My Own Work, you may find it a useful online resource.

The program's content is divided into five modules:


1. Scholarship Principles and Practices
2. Acknowledging Sources
3. Plagiarism
4. Copyright
5. Working with others

Each module contains:

• Information and advice on the module focus questions
• Quiz questions
• Summary
• Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
• Link to a glossary
• Links to relevant websites.

The site also includes the statement: Honesty in HSC Assessment, detailing the roles and responsibilities of staff and others as well as students.

Twilight film - Australian release date update; updated teaser trailers; Midnight Sun

According the the Internet Movie Database page on Twilight, the Australian release date for the film has been moved forward to 11 December 2008.  (And will that cause HaPpY dAnCeS among some fanlets I know?  Oh yes!)

MovieJungle has updated teaser trailers of the film here.  That page also has links to interviews with various people associated with the film.

A partial draft of Midnight Sun (Twilight from Edwards point of view) was released virally on the net (breaching copyright).  Stephenie Meyer has now made that draft available online at her site here, and has abandoned any publication plans for this indefinitely.  There's a statement about it on her site.  She also has a FAQ for Breaking Dawn here (many spoilers, so be aware of this if you haven't read the book).
